U.S. Capital for a Day Yearlong Campaign
SITUATION: The Montgomery County Town of Brookeville, considered the “U.S. Capital for a Day,” celebrated the bicentennial of this momentous occasion with five events aimed at branding the Town itself and bringing awareness to its historical place in the War of 1812. The events were the James & Dolley Madison Dinner, a history symposium, a town house tour, the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail dedication, and the U.S. Capital for a Day two-day celebration/re-enactment, part of the Star-Spangled 200 Celebration.
SOLUTION: Purple Dot PR pulled together an experienced team to plan, promote and execute all five events that occurred between August 2013 and September 2014, and attracted between 200 and 10,000 people nationwide.
RESULTS: Working with various strategic partners, committees, community and business leaders, Purple Dot Public Relations successfully promoted all the events and received excellent media attention. The August Event attendees totaled 10,000 (5,000 were expected) and coverage included print, broadcast and on-line outlets such as National Group Tour Travel Leader Magazine, Washington Post, Montgomery Gazette, Philadelphia Magazine, WAMU Radio, WTTG Fox Washington, WBAL-TV Baltimore, Fairfax Times, Montgomery Cable TV, The Epoch Times (Chinese American Newspaper) and Smithsonian Magazine, among many others. “U.S. Capital for a Day” received mentions and stories in various tourism and partner organization newsletters such as the Key Notes - Star-Spangled 200, Visit Maryland, the American Historical Association, D.C. War of 1812 Star-Spangled Celebration, MD Historical Society, and more.
